Gummy Smile

Gummy Smile Treatment, Belsize Park, London

A gummy smile occurs when a noticeable amount of gum is visible above the upper teeth when smiling. For some, this is simply part of their natural anatomy, while for others it can be a source of self-consciousness. If you feel that your smile shows more gum than you would like, there are effective and minimally invasive ways to soften the appearance without changing the essence of your natural expression.

At Heath Clinic, Belsize Park, we take a gentle and personalised approach to correcting a gummy smile. Using targeted muscle relaxation and regenerative skin treatments when needed, we help create a more balanced and harmonious smile while preserving full movement and character.

What causes a gummy smile?

A gummy smile is often the result of several contributing factors, including:

01

Overactive upper lip muscles that lift the lip too high when smiling

02

A short or thin upper lip

03

Excess gum tissue

04

Small or worn-down teeth

05

High lip line or altered tooth eruption patterns

06

Genetics and facial anatomy

While completely harmless, a gummy smile can affect confidence. Treatment can help reduce the amount of gum shown and bring balance between the lips, teeth and gums.

Our Approach to Gummy Smile

The most common and effective treatment for a gummy smile is a small dose of botulinum toxin injected into the muscles that elevate the upper lip. This relaxes the lip slightly, reducing how high it lifts when you smile and therefore minimising gum exposure. The result is a softer, more balanced smile that still looks entirely natural.

  • Botulinum toxin is injected into specific points near the nose and upper lip to reduce the activity of the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle. This muscle is responsible for lifting the upper lip during expression. By calming this movement, the lip rests slightly lower when smiling.

This treatment takes only a few minutes and is often described as quick and comfortable. Results develop within five to ten days and typically last three to four months. Regular treatments can help maintain your results and, in some cases, reduce the need for ongoing treatment over time.

  • In some cases, we may combine toxin with subtle lip filler to support the lip structure and improve proportion.

We will always assess your anatomy carefully and explain your treatment options fully before proceeding. Subtlety and precision are at the core of our approach.

  • Results from botulinum toxin last around three to four months. Over time, regular treatments may lead to a longer-lasting effect.

  • The injections are very quick and use a fine needle. Most patients describe only mild discomfort, and no anaesthetic is needed.

  • There is no downtime. You may have slight redness or swelling at the injection site for a few minutes, but this settles quickly.

  • Yes. Depending on your facial structure, we may recommend combining botulinum toxin with lip filler or regenerative treatments to enhance the result and support the skin.
