Nose-to-mouth lines

Nasolabial folds treatment, Belsize Park, London

Nose to mouth lines, also known as nasolabial folds, are the lines that run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. These folds are a natural feature of facial anatomy and appear in everyone to some degree. Over time, they can deepen due to ageing, changes in facial structure or volume loss, and may contribute to a heavier or more tired appearance.

At Heath Clinic, we treat nasolabial folds as part of a full-face approach to rejuvenation. Rather than simply filling the lines, we look at the underlying causes and use a combination of structural support, skin regeneration and subtle volume restoration to achieve natural, long-lasting results.

What causes nose-to-mouth lines?

Nasolabial folds are formed by a combination of natural anatomy and the way the face moves. They deepen over time due to:

01

Volume loss in the cheeks and midface

02

Skin laxity and reduced collagen

03

Repetitive facial expression

04

Bone resorption in the midface

05

Fat pad descent with age

06

Genetics and lifestyle factors

These folds are often more visible when smiling, but in time, they can become more noticeable at rest, contributing to a heavier or more drawn appearance in the lower face.

Our Approach to Nose to Mouth Lines

We take a structural and regenerative approach to softening nose-to-mouth lines. Our goal is never to overfill the fold but to address the facial changes that are contributing to its depth. This leads to more natural and longer-lasting results

  • Rather than placing filler directly into the fold, we often begin by restoring volume in the cheeks and midface. This helps lift the skin upward and outward, reducing the weight that contributes to deeper nasolabial folds. The result is a more subtle softening of the lines and a refreshed overall appearance.

  • In some cases, we may also place a small amount of soft, flexible filler directly into the fold to smooth its appearance. This is done with care to avoid heaviness or distortion and to maintain natural facial movement.

  • For patients with deeper or more structural nose-to-mouth lines, JULÄINE™ offers a regenerative approach. As a biostimulator made from poly-L-lactic acid, it encourages natural collagen production over time, improving skin firmness and restoring volume gradually. This is particularly beneficial for those experiencing thinning skin or age-related volume loss in the lower face. Results are progressive and long-lasting, with visible improvement continuing for months after treatment.

  • Secret RF uses radiofrequency microneedling to stimulate collagen and tighten the skin. It is particularly effective for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity and can improve both the appearance of folds and the firmness of the surrounding tissue.

  • Nose-to-mouth lines are rarely an isolated issue. They are part of a broader pattern of facial ageing that includes changes in the cheeks, jawline, and mouth area. That is why we assess your entire face before recommending treatment. By supporting the skin and underlying structure together, we create results that look natural and in balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • This depends on what is causing the fold. For many patients, midface fillers to support the cheek area is most effective. In some cases, a small amount of filler to the fold or regenerative skin treatments may be recommended as well.

  • No. We focus on light, strategic placement to restore lift and structure. Our approach avoids overfilling and aims for natural, proportionate results.

  • Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last between 9 and 18 months, depending on the product used. Regenerative treatments like JULÄINE™ or Secret RF build gradually and offer longer-term support to the skin.

  • There may be some mild swelling or bruising with injectable treatments, but most patients return to normal activities the same day. Secret RF or laser treatments may cause mild redness for one to two days.

  • Yes. If the lines are early or due to skin laxity rather than volume loss, we may recommend polynucleotides, microneedling or skin tightening instead of or alongside filler.

  • All treatments are performed with your comfort in mind. We use numbing cream for injectables and advanced techniques to minimise discomfort. Most patients find the treatments very tolerable.

  • Absolutely. Nose to mouth lines are often treated alongside other areas such as the cheeks, jawline or mouth corners to achieve a balanced, natural result.
